Acupuncture for Pregnancy and Birth

Acupuncture has been practiced, developed and refined for over 4000 years in China. It is used for pain relief and a wide range of diseases and syndromes. It is also very effective for stress reduction and as a preventative medicine. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

Chinese philosophy states that our health is dependent on the energy “Qi” circulating in a smooth and balanced way through a network of meridians and collaterals. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by emotional and environmental factors, as well as diet. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance - the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.

Acupuncture can be very effective in some pregnancy related concerns, preparation for childbirth and for discomfort during childbirth.  Amanda uses pre-birth acupuncture starting at 37 weeks to help women prepare their bodies for birth. This helps to ripen the cervix, relax the mind and in some cases shorten the length of labour. Here are some clinical studies to demonstrate the benefit of pre-labour acupuncture.

She also provides acupuncture treatments in preparation for a planned cesarean birth

"I wanted to take a moment to thank Amanda for her Acupuncture services. Amanda joined me on a moment’s notice when I needed her most mid-labour and was able to aid me with my back labour and nausea. Not only was the Acupuncture effective, but Amanda's presence was both calming and comforting. I would highly recommend Amanda and only wish I had commenced using her leading up to the birth of our beautiful daughter."

"I have seen Amanda three times now and my experience with her has been great. She took the time to get to know my issues and provided a very effective treatment. At each visit, she again took the time to see how I was doing and progressing with my healing. She adjusted her treatment each time to support where I was that day. She is a great listener and is very skilled in what she does. I would without a doubt recommend everyone to Amanda."
